Week 1
Present simple (regular): “he walks” (BR page 103 & in Basisboek pp 250 + 254/55)
Use it when something is a:
- Routine (I usually take the bus)
- Permanent (I work for/at Avans)
- State (Avans lies in Den Bosch)
- Timetabled events (The train leaves at 10.15)
- Future, if preceded by: as soon as, after, if, when etc
(When I see him tomorrow, I’ll give him the book)
Present continuous (ing-form) ”he is walking” (Do exercises Business Result p. 103)
Use it when something is going on
- Action happening at the moment of speaking (I am speaking)
- Ongoing project (They are redecorating my room)
- Temporary activity/state (You are studying at Avans)
- Gradual change (Glaciers are melting)
- Future, by appointment or arrangement (I am seeing him next Friday)
Week 2
Past simple (See Basisboek pp. 280-284)
Past tense: ww+ed or irregular past tense! Something it took place in the past
- Refers to a finished period in the past: I saw last week’s concert.
- Questions referring to the past: When did you meet him?
Present Perfect (BR P.107 (compare Basisboek pp. 251-252)
Use when something happened in the past and is going on right now
Present Perfect (have + ww+ ed or irregular):
- Link present situation to sth. that took place in the past: He has published the new book.
- With unfinished time periods: I haven’t seen him since last week.
- Indicate duration of states and activities: How long have you been studying?
- Things that happened very recently: The police have just arrived.
- Tasks expected to be done: Have you finished the website yet?
Week 3
Past Perfect ( Basisboek pp. 253-254)
Past Perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord):
- Two situations in the past: The burglar had broken the window before he entered the house.
- Indicate duration in the past until another point in the past.
- They had lived in a caravan for one year before they moved into their new house
